New for 2015!

There are a few new things happening around here these days.
New and exciting things!
Things for you, from me!

Number 1...
How about a newsletter?
Yes, that sounds good.
But how about a newsletter filled with things you want (not just advertising).
Free things. Inspiring things. Things to create. Things to enjoy.
Yes, that's the kind of newsletter I am talking about.

This year, I am going to focus on six different types of content:

How about a new Block of the Month?
Yes, that sounds good too.

That's the kind of project I am talking about.

How about a great new book?
Yes, that sounds good too.
How about a book about modern string quilting.
A book filled with patterns (12 of them) to decrease your scraps and increase your level of cozy.

And finally, Number 4...
How about a FANTASTIC new house?
Yes, that sounds really good too.
But how about a HOME. A comfy, cozy little place on the central coast of California.
A place where a family can settle in and enjoy the changing of the seasons and the marching of time.
Together. With love and happiness and fresh eggs every day.

(And yes, this is our home. We are looking to make a MAJOR change in our address. To start a new page and a new adventure in a new place. New. New, New. And a little old. Because you can't change everything. And who would want to? We will still be the same happy couple with the same time tested outlook on life and the same beloved small businesses. We will just be enjoying it all in a DIFFERENT place. A place where the changing of the seasons looks and smells a little different than here and where time still marches on, whether you want it to or not. And yes, the new place will still be filled with love and togetherness and fresh eggs daily, but our hens will be a lot more cold hardy!)

Simple Summer Mantle

I kept the mantel pretty clean and simple this summer.

3 cloches, 2 carnations, 1 mini greenhouse and 1 bird w/ cage.

I really like it.

I also like goofing around with Photoshop.

Here is what that same mantle might look like if my house were in Ancient Rome.

Or in a honky-tonk.

Or in a modern magazine.

Or in a bubble.

Or in Atlantis.

Ok, seriously. I have got to get back to work.

Have A Cupcake!

Well, it's official.
I have a married daughter and I am a year older!
A brand new son-in-law and a few more gray hairs all in one week. Fortunately, the son-in-law did not cause the gray hairs!!

Between hair dying sessions and wedding planning, I have managed to get a few things done. Like a little free pattern to help celebrate my birthday! It's called Have A Cupcake and you can download it here.

Cute, yeh?

I put mine on a tea towel. But wouldn't it look cute on a bib or party napkins. Polka dot party napkins! Or maybe as a little 4 block table topper. Or......

It is about 8" square as is, but reducing and enlarging are simple enough. So change it up if you need to. And....let me know what you do with it!

Marking the Seasons

It's been 10 years.
10 years since we first drove up this winding little road.
This winding little road that goes up and up and up.

10 years since our first trip past the almond trees in bloom.
I mark the years we have lived here by those pink blossoms.

They haven't always looked so sparse. So neglected.
But the years have crept up on them. And so has the Spanish moss.
That is the way with time. It marches on. And things change.

Like our home.
When we first saw it, the hillside house with the red door, it looked like this:

Grandma Carol took this picture for us, and I am so grateful that she did.
We can look back because someone else looked forward and knew that we would want to.

This is a foggy morning shot of our house recently.

It's green now, not grey.
The oaks have grown and plants have been added.
And girls have grown up and moved away.
But the door is still red. And it still opens up to the place we call home.
